For a prospective guest, it becomes part of the decision-making environment: a place to understand the destination, evaluate accommodation, assess logistics, establish trust, understand value and eventually determine whether booking directly feels sufficiently clear.
But information being available is not the same as information being usable at the moment it is needed.
This research examines that distinction across an audited corpus of 40 independent, luxury, and experiential hospitality properties across Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean destinations.
The study does not measure hotel service quality, guest satisfaction, booking conversion, revenue, booking abandonment or guest behaviour. It examines the digital information architecture and decision environment presented by official property websites and their associated booking journeys.
The central research proposition is what HGP describes as the Decision Friction Gap:
The information required to evaluate and make a hospitality decision may exist within a website ecosystem, yet still require additional effort because it is fragmented, delayed, difficult to compare, inconsistently presented, or separated from the point at which the decision is being made.
Across the 40-property corpus, several recurring structural patterns emerged:

* 7.5% (3/40) were confirmed as true domain contradictions under the locked consistency definition.

These findings do not establish that any individual website condition causes booking abandonment, revenue loss, lower conversion or changes in guest behaviour.
Instead, they identify observable digital decision-architecture conditions that can introduce additional information friction into the prospective guest journey.
The significance of the research therefore lies not simply in whether information exists.
It lies in how much work the guest must perform to connect that information into a decision.
A prospective guest rarely approaches a luxury hospitality website with a single question.
The decision develops through a sequence of questions:
A website can answer all of these questions somewhere within its domain and still make the decision unnecessarily difficult.
That distinction became increasingly important as HGP's research expanded from its initial dataset to 40 properties.
The research therefore moved beyond a simple question of whether information exists.

how it is presented,
and whether it appears at a point relevant to the decision sequence being evaluated.
This led to a broader research question:
What happens when a hospitality website contains the information a prospective guest needs, but the digital architecture makes the guest assemble, locate or reconcile that information themselves?
The 40-property study was designed to examine that question systematically.
Traditional website evaluation often asks whether information is present and whether navigation is technically functional.
HGP's research takes a different perspective.

Trust signals displayed prominently on a homepage may technically be available while remaining distant from the point at which the guest is considering entering the booking process.
None of these observations necessarily means that information is absent.
The issue is different.
The guest may need to connect information across different parts of the website, remember information encountered earlier, interpret different formats, or wait until a later stage of the booking journey before certain details become visible.
The research therefore treats these conditions as decision-architecture observations, rather than simply content-presence questions.
The final research corpus contains:

4.1 Content Gap
Required decision information is entirely absent from the official domain.
This is the most direct form of information deficiency.
The relevant information cannot be located because it has not been identified anywhere within the audited domain.
4.2 Connection Gap
Required decision information exists on the official domain but requires synthesis across three or more distinct URL paths.
The information is therefore technically available within the website ecosystem.
However, the guest must connect information from multiple locations to construct the relevant decision picture.
This is not classified as a navigation-quality judgment.
It is a structural observation based on the number and separation of information paths required during evaluation.
4.3 Placement Gap
Required decision information exists on the official domain but surfaces only after the guest enters the CRS/booking-engine commitment phase.
The distinction from Connection Gap is important.
A Connection Gap concerns information that exists across multiple pre-booking pages and requires synthesis.
A Placement Gap concerns information that is not surfaced during the relevant pre-booking evaluation but becomes available only after the booking process has begun.
4.4 Consistency Gap
The domain contains operationally incompatible claims under the same property, scope and time-period conditions.
This category is deliberately narrow.
The research does not classify every discrepancy as a contradiction.
Ambiguous, outdated and seasonal differences are separately recorded rather than being automatically treated as true contradictions.
This distinction materially affects the final contradiction rate.
For many hospitality properties, the guest's decision does not end with selecting a room.

Why this matters to decision architecture
A guest evaluating a remote property may need to understand not only what the accommodation offers, but also how the journey works.
When transfer information is distributed between accommodation pages, destination pages, FAQs, PDFs, booking information or later booking stages, the guest's decision process becomes dependent on connecting those pieces.
The research therefore treats arrival information not as secondary operational content, but as part of the pre-booking decision environment.
A direct-booking proposition can contain tangible benefits:

5.0% (2/40) contain no identifiable direct-booking incentive within the audited domain.

The finding should not be interpreted as meaning that 60% of the properties provide no direct-booking benefits.

Luxury hospitality websites frequently provide extensive accommodation information.

But providing individual accommodation descriptions is not necessarily the same as helping a guest compare accommodation categories.
The audit therefore classified the accommodation-comparison experience into three levels:

This does not mean that 92.5% lack room information.

The distinction is important because the research is concerned with what the website asks the prospective guest to evaluate first, rather than prescribing a universally correct website sequence.
Trust is often discussed as though it were either present or absent.
The 40-property research suggests that this binary view is insufficient.

No live AI retrieval or synthetic RAG performance test was conducted as part of the research.
The finding is therefore strictly about the structural format in which information is published.
This distinction is important as hospitality websites increasingly become information sources not only for human visitors but also for search systems, accessibility tools and other digital interfaces.
However, any claim about how a particular AI system processes that information would require a separate empirical test.
That is outside the scope of this study.
Taken individually, each finding describes a different structural condition.
Together, they reveal a broader pattern.
A prospective guest may encounter:
None of these observations automatically means that the website is ineffective.
Nor does the research establish a direct commercial consequence.
But each condition can add another step between finding information and using that information to make a decision.
This is the central concept behind the Decision Friction Gap.
Information can exist.
Information can be accurate.
Information can even be visually prominent.
Yet the overall decision can still require additional synthesis.
That additional work is where decision friction becomes visible.
To maintain methodological discipline, HGP separates the research into three levels.

For remote and island properties especially, the journey to the property is part of the evaluation environment.
Arrival details should therefore be considered alongside accommodation and experience information rather than treated exclusively as post-booking operational content.
16.2 Direct-booking value should remain connected to rate evaluation
If direct-booking benefits exist, their relationship to the rate-selection environment matters.
The guest should not necessarily have to remember a benefit encountered several pages earlier while evaluating a rate.
16.3 Accommodation information should support comparison
Individual room descriptions answer:
"What is this?"
Comparison architecture answers:
"Which one is right for me?"
These are different information requirements.
16.4 Decision-critical information should be connected
When the guest must assemble information across multiple paths, the website effectively transfers part of the synthesis task to the guest.
The research identifies this as a Connection Gap when the locked threshold of three or more URL paths is reached.
16.5 Trust should be considered within the decision context
Trust evidence can be valuable without necessarily being positioned where reassurance is most relevant.
The research therefore distinguishes trust presence from trust placement.
16.6 Structural information formats deserve strategic consideration
PDFs, graphics and other document formats can be useful communication tools.
The research does not argue that such formats should never be used.
Rather, it identifies cases where essential decision information depends substantially on such formats, creating a structural dependency that may warrant review.
The most significant shift in the HGP research is therefore conceptual.
The website should not be evaluated only as a collection of pages.
It can also be evaluated as a decision environment.
The guest does not experience:
The guest attempts to combine them into one decision.
This is where traditional content auditing can miss an important dimension.
A page can be excellent in isolation while the relationship between pages remains difficult.
A piece of information can be accurate while its placement is suboptimal for the decision being evaluated.
A benefit can exist while its relationship to the rate remains unclear.

A room description can be comprehensive while comparison between rooms remains difficult.

The research does not claim that these conditions directly reduce bookings or revenue.
It demonstrates something more fundamental.
The architecture of information can shape the amount of work required to make sense of a hospitality proposition.
For HGP, that is the Decision Friction Gap:
